ChampionsUniversity of Minnesota men's tennis player Avery Ticer was eliminated in the quarterfinals of singles and in the semifinals of doubles with Clay Estes today at the 2003 ITA Midwest Regional Championship East Lansing, Mich.
In the singles draw, Ticer, seeded 14th, lost to No. 2 seed Mike Calkins of Illinois, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. For the tournament, Ticer, a junior, went 4-1, defeating the No. 5 seed, Matt Scott of Notre Dame.
In the doubles bracket, the ninth-seeded Avery and Ticer went 1-1 today, dropping Ryan Recht and John Stone of Indiana, 8-6, before losing to No. 3 Mike Calkins and Chris Marting of Illinois, 8-5, in the semifinals. Avery and Ticer posted a 4-1 record at the tournament, defeating No. 5 Brent D'Amico and Matt Scott of Notre Dame in the round of 16.
The Midwest Regional's singles champion and runner-up as well as the doubles champion automatically advance to the ITA National Championships in early November.
