Four members of the Minnesota men’s tennis team will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. thi weekend to compete in the 2013 Big Ten Singles Championships this weekend. Juniors Tucker Saxon and Eric Frueh, sophomore Ruben Weber, and freshman Jeremy Lynn will represent the Gophers at the event, which will be played at Purdue’s Schwartz Tennis Center and Lafayette Sports Center.
The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, beginning with one round of singles play and two rounds of doubles action, and will run through Monday.
Frueh will be the first Minnesota player in action, kicking off the first round of play against Indiana’s Kellen Bates at 8 a.m. Lynn will make his collegiate debut at the same time against Jakhongir Jalalov of Wisconsin.
Later in the day, Saxon will open his weekend against Michigan State’s Harry Jadun and Weber will face Penn State’s David Kohan.
Saxon will make his first appearance of 2013-14, while Weber and Frueh opened at the USTA/ITA Division I Men's Central Regional Championship last week in Tulsa, Okla. Both players bowed out in the first round, but Weber recovered to win all three consolation matches he played.
In doubles play later in the afternoon, Weber and Frueh will compete against Iowa's Dominic Patrick and Andres Estenssoro while Saxon and Lynn will play Michigan State's Will Davis and Paul Heeder.
Following this weekend, the team will welcome Penn, Dartmouth, Princeton, Denver, Western Michigan, and DePaul to the Baseline Tennis Center Oct. 31-Nov. 3 for the Gopher Invitational.
