w Several Golden Gopher men's tennis players are competing at the All- American Tournament in Atlanta, Ga. Thomas Haug will compete in the Main Draw which begins on Oct. 11. Currently Aleksey Zharinov is one match away from qualifying for the main draw. He faces Andre van der Merve of UAB this morning.
Zharinov won his first four matches before falling in the fifth round of pre-qualifying. Due to another player withdrawing though, Zharinov's name was drawn randomly and he was allowed to advance to the first round of qualifying singles. Zharinov then defeated Georgia State's Pablo Perez, 6-4, 6-2, to set up today's matchup.
Four other Golden Gophers won first-round matches in pre-qualifying singles, but all four were eliminated in the second round. Reven Stephens, Ticer Avery, Chris Wettengel and Eric Robertson earned victories in the first round, but all fell in the second round. Wettengel dropped a tough three-set decision to Wake Forest's Trent Brendon, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-4.
In pre-qualifying doubles, Ticer and Stephens were eliminated in the first round by Ramey and Wakeford of Texas Tech, 8-4. Robertson and Zharinov won their first round match, 8-5, over Burghard and Rizzo of San Diego. The duo advanced to the third round after defeating Martin and Mendoza of TCU, 8-6. They were subsequently eliminated in the third round by Wake Forest's Brendon and Lowenthal, 8-6.
