University of Minnesota men's tennis player D.J. Geatz (Minneapolis, Minn.) continued his strong play this fall, advancing to the finals of the singles consolation draw today at the 2005 Denver Invitational at the University of Denver. Geatz, a junior, went 2-0 on the day to improve to 3-1 on the season. For the day, the Golden Gophers went 2-2 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles action.
In the singles consolation draw of Flight A, Geatz moved to the final with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Eric Molnar of Colorado and Air Force's Trevor Johnson retiring with an injury in the semifinals. Also in the consolation draw, Andres Osorio and Sion Wilkins each fell in their quarterfinal matches. Osorio lost 6-3, 6-1 to Chad Tsuda of Colorado, while Wilkins fell 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to Johnson. Geatz will take on James Clow of Nebraska in the consolation final tomorrow.
In the Open Doubles draw, Minnesota's duo of Geatz and Osorio won their first match, but fell in the quarterfinals. In the round of 16, the Golden Gopher duo downed Max Jones and Johnny Parkes of New Mexico, 8-3, before falling 8-3 to 25th-ranked and second-seeded Adam Holmstrom and Niklas Persson of Denver in the semifinals.
The 2005 Denver Invitational concludes tomorrow and features two flights of singles competition consisting of 32 players with a consolation round in each. The doubles bracket is a single-elimination open field of 32 pairs.
