MTN: Minnesota Finishes with Strong Showing at Crimson Tide Fall Championships

captThe University of Minnesota men's tennis team finished its first week of play of the 2005 -06 season today with a strong showing at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Junior captain Mikey Kantar (Minneapolis, Minn.) won his singles draw, while senior Adrien Debreyne took second place in his singles bracket. For the tournament, Minnesota went 11-2 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles action.

Kantar captured the title in Open Singles C draw with a 5-0 record. Today, he won the bracket after South Alabama's Filip Kricka withdrew with an injury. In the Open Singles B final, Debreyne lost his first match of the tournament, falling 6-3, 6-2 to Alin Zorila- Ditoiu of Hampton. Debreyne finished the event with a 4-1 singles record.

Eighteen teams and 94 athletes from across the nation participated in the Crimson Tide Fall Championships. The tournament included 10 singles players currently ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s top 100. The tournament featured three flights of singles, three flights of doubles and two flights of One-on-One doubles.

The Golden Gophers continue their fall season next weekend at the Denver Invitational on Sept. 23-25.
