Several University of Minnesota men’s and women’s tennis players are listed among the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Rankings. Two members from each team were selected in the singles category, while the men’s team also owns one ranked doubles duo.
Sophomore Leandro Toledo leads the men’s rankings for the Gophers at No. 50. Last season, Toledo led the team with a 23-11 overall record and nabbed the Big Ten Freshman of the Year title. Rok Bonin follows in a tie at No. 87. Bonin returns for his senior season after going 15-9 in singles play last year. Together, Toledo and Bonin represent the Maroon and Gold as the No. 32 doubles pick, despite having each played with different partners in 2011-12.
On the woman’s side, senior Alexa Palen leads for Minnesota at No. 84 followed by junior Natalia Pintusava at No. 93. Palen ended the 2011-12 campaign with an 18-12 singles record and an 18-16 doubles record. Pintusava finished the season with an 18-11 singles record and became a national doubles threat when paired with Magdalena Wiecha. The duo wrapped up the season with a No. 39 final ranking.
The women open the fall season this weekend as hosts of the annual Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center. The men begin their season on Sept. 28-30 when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for the Penn Invitational.
