GoldeThe University of Minnesota men's tennis team fell victim to top-ranked Stanford University by a score of 4-0 Saturday marking the second time in three years that the Cardinal has eliminated the Golden Gophers from the sweet 16 of the NCAA Tennis Championships in Athens, Ga.
The shutout marked Minnesota's first of the season as the Golden Gophers drop to 0-6 all-time in NCAA Championships play.
Stanford's fifth-ranked product of Geoff Abrams defeated Minnesota's Thomas Haug 6-1, 6- 2 in the No. 2 position to pace the Cardinal to a 3-0 finish in singles play. Stanford's David Martin then took care of Minnesota's Martin Michalowski 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 4 slot while Ali Ansari defeated Minnesota's Eric Robertson 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 to round out the trio of wins.
In doubles, Stanford's No. 1- ranked pair of Abrams and Alex Kim prevailed over Minnesota's No. 27-ranked Haug and Michalowski 8-4 in the top spot while the Cardinal duo of Ansari and Scotty Scott took care of Minnesota's Robertson and Tyson Parry 8-5 in the No. 3 position.
With the loss, Minnesota's season ends at 24-7 overall while Stanford advances face TCU. Additionally, the win marks Stanford's 25th of its last 26th in NCAA Tournament matches including an impressive 21 of 22 at the Championships site.
