ChampionshipThe University of Minnesota men's tennis team won three matches in singles and two in doubles to post a 4-0 shutout over Columbia University Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championships at Terre Haute, Ind.
Minnesota's Harsh Mankad defeated Columbia's Akram Zaman 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 slot, Minnesota's Thomas Haug took care of Columbia's Steve Millerman 6-3, 6-4. Winning in the No. 3 position was Minnesota's Jorge Duenas who defeated Columbia's Peter Holik 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, Minnesota's Martin Michalowski and Haug defeated Columbia's Seshardri and Zaman 8-5 in No. 1, while Mankad and Duenas defeated Holik and Kaplan 8-4 in the No. 2 position.
The Golden Gophers will advance to second round action in Terre Haute, Ind., to face host Indiana State University tomorrow at noon. The Sycamores defeated Purdue in first round play by a score of 4-1.
