The 37th-ranked University of Minnesota men's tennis team earned one of 34 at-large bids for the 2004 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships and will head to Durham, N.C., for the first and second rounds on May 15-16. The Golden Gophers take on No. 33 Clemson in the first round at noon (EDT) on Saturday, May 15. On the other side of the regional bracket, Duke, the tournament's No. 5 seed and the nation's sixth-ranked team, hosts Winthrop. The two winners will meet in the regional final at noon on Sunday, May 16 for the right to advance to Tulsa, Okla., for the final four rounds of the NCAA Championships.

The Maroon and Gold did not face any of the three teams in the regional this season. Minnesota, Ohio State and defending NCAA Champion Illinois claimed bids to the NCAA Championships from the Big Ten.

Golden Gopher Head Coach David Geatz has led Minnesota to 11 straight trips to the NCAA Championships. This season marks the Maroon and Gold's 12th tournament appearance in Geatz's 16 years at the helm of the program. By comparison, UM made just five NCAA appearances from 1947-88.
