tThe University of Minnesota tennis team placed 11th at the Corpus Christi Invitational at the H.E.B Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, this past weekend. The Golden Gophers were one of 16 teams to compete in the invitational. In the first round, Minnesota lost to Texas Tech 4-2. The following match, the Golden Gophers defeated UNLV 4-1. In the third match, Minnesota lost to New Mexico 4-3 and in the final match on Sunday, Minnesota topped Middle Tennessee 4-3.
Against Texas Tech, Minnesota only managed to win two singles and one doubles match. Senior Adam Selkirk defeated Cariov 61-, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles position. At No. 4 singles, sophomore Jon Svensson defeated Danolic 6-1, 6-0. The doubles team of freshmen Ryan Davies and Thomas Haug defeated Baranowski and Witeat 8-5 at the No. 3 doubles position.
In the second match of the three-day tournament, Minnesota defeated UNLV 4-1. Minnesota won three singles matches and two doubles matches on the day. Two singles matches and one doubles match was never completed in the meet. Sophomore Tyson Parry defeated Nenad Zivkovic 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Haug defeated Gregor Skorin 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and sophomore Jorge Duenas defeated Andy Madersbacher 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. The doubles teams of Chicoine and junior Martin Michalowski defeated Zivkovic and Damu Bobb 8-2 and Davies and Haug defeated Danny Erez and Tyler Roberts 9-8.
In the third match of the tournament, Minnesota lost 4-3 to New Mexico. Minnesota won two singles matches and two of three doubles matches to score a total of three team points. Michalowski defeated Takesh Itah at No. 4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Duenas also won his match at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3 over Miran Cehajic.
In the final match on Sunday, Minnesota defeated Middle Tennesse 4-3. The Golden Gophers won three singles matches and two doubles matches in the meet. Senior Tom Chicoine defeated Matt Walker 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Parry also won his match at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0 over Mark Petterin. Also winning for Minnesota was Duenas at No. 6 singles with a 7-6, 6-1 score over Mehdi Bolbacka.
