maThe 31st-ranked University of Minnesota men's tennis team lost to No. 12 Virginia Commonwealth by a score of 4-3 on Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Center. VCU won the doubles point and three singles matches for the victory. The Golden Gophers are now 3-2 on the season.
In doubles action, Gophers Cl ay Estes and A very Ticer fell to VCU's Florian Marquardt and Arnaud LeCloerec by a score of 8-6. Alexey Zharinov and Sion Williams also were defeated by Marton Ott and Pedro Nieto, 8-5. The match between C hris Wettengel and A ndres Osorio and Sergi Arumi and Francesc Lleal did not finish.
Singles play saw Minnesota come up with three points due to abandoned matches at No. 3, 5 and 6. At No. 1, Zharinov fell to LeCloerec, 1-6, 6-3, 6-7; followed by Ticer at No. 2 losing straight sets to Nieto, 3-6, 4-6. No. 4 Osorio won his first set 6-2 over VCU's Arumi, but then lost the next two, 1-6, 2-6.
The Golden Gophers will take on Harvard Monday, February 16 at 12 Noon at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
