CThe 23rd-ranked University of Minnesota men's tennis team was defeated by No. 10-ranked Southern Methodist University 5-2 in the first day of the Clemson Winter Classic held at Clemson University in Clemson, S.C.

Junior Martin Michalowski and sophomore Jon Svensson were the lone winners in singles play for the Golden Gophers. Michalowski defeated Symen DeLange 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Svensson defeated Gerardo Mulas 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Minnesota managed only one doubles win with senior Tom Chicoine and Michalowski topping Mulas and Keith Pollak 8-5 at No. 1 singles.
