MINNEAPOLIS - The Gopher Men's Tennis team will open its 2018 Big Ten campaign with the annual `Border Battle' against rival Wisconsin.
Minnesota (3-3) has used several different line-ups in the early going of the dual season, with multiple athletes competing at each of the six singles positions and six different doubles pairs seeing action. Last week, Felix Corwin shifted into the no. 1 position, picking up one of the Gophers' two victories on Friday night against Dartmouth. He had previously been 2-0 at no. 2 singles. The second and third spots in the line-up have been Minnesota's most effective this year, with Matic Spec currently 4-1 competing at no. 3 singles and the Gophers earning victories in 5-of-6 matches at that spot in the line-up as sophomore Eli Ogilvy is 1-0 at the third spot.
Josip Krstanovic has seen the most movement throughout the line-up, competing at second, fourth, fifth, and sixth singles while he and Justyn Levin have also played all three doubles positions. They're 3-2 together this dual season while Krstanovic is 2-2 in singles play.
Baseline Club Meet & Greet
Members of the Gopher Baseline Club will have an exclusive Meet & Greet with the team following Saturday's match at around 3:30 p.m.
Minnesota did not get the result the team was looking for Friday, falling 5-2 to Dartmouth with victories from Corwin at no. 1 singles and Ogilvy at no. 4. The team bounced back in a big way Saturday with a slightly different line-up as they dominated Rice, 6-1, in Hanover, N.H. Corwin and Spec came from down 6-5 to win no. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker. Spec also dominated in singles, winning 6-1, 6-0 at the no. 3 spot.
Gophers in the Rankings
Stefan Milicevic moved up one spot from no. 35 to no. 34 in the latest Oracle/ITA Div. I Singles Rankings released Feb. 7. This spring, he's posted a 1-2 mark at no. 1 singles with a victory last time out but is 12-5 on the year and 2-3 against nationally ranked competition. While Matic Spec slipped out of the singles rankings, he and teammate Felix Corwin held serve in the Oracle/ITA Div. I Doubles Rankings at no. 25. The pair is 2-1 at no. 1 doubles during the dual season and 8-4 overall this year. They're 0-1 against national ranked competition.
Returning All-Big Ten
Minnesota returns three All-Big Ten honorees from a season ago in Spec, Corwin, and Krstanovic. Spec landed on the First Team All-Big Ten with a 21-16 overall mark and 6-6 mark against conference foes. Corwin landed on the Second Team All-Big Ten with a 23-13 mark and a 7-6 conference record. Krstanovic posted a 21-9 record in his sophomore season and earned Minnesota's Big Ten Sportsmanship award.
Scouting the Badgers Website | @BadgerMTennis
Wisconsin (4-4) has dropped its last two duals heading into the weekend and will take on Marquette in Madison on Thursday night before heading to Minneapolis ... head coach Danny Westerman is in his third season leading the Badgers ... Wisconsin's duo of Chema Carranza and Josef Dodridge rank no. 3 in the nation per last week's Oracle/ITA Division I rankings. The pair is currently 4-0 at the no. 1 doubles position and 18-3 for the entirety of the season ... like Minnesota, the Badgers have used a lot of different line-ups this season with Carranza and Lamar Remy splitting top at the no. 1 singles spot ... Wisconsin has not found the right formula at the no. 2 spot with three different athletes (Carranza, Dodridge, and Remy) a combined 1-6. At the same time, Dodridge, Osgar O'Hoison, and Daniel Soyfer are a combined 5-1 at no. 3 singles ... the Gophers are 59-49 all-time against the Badgers, but Wisconsin earned a 4-3 victory last season in Madison.
