Three players won both singles and doubles matches as Minnesota improved to 3-1 for the season with a 6-1 win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday in Richmond, Ky.
Kentucky native Phillip Arndt was a double winner for the Gophers along with Michael Sicora and Tobias Wernet, who teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Arndt joined Ishay Hadash for an 8-0 rout at No. 3 doubles.
Arndt also picked up a 7-5, 6-1 win over Niklas Schroeder at No. 4 singles, while Wernet beat Mel Segota 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 and Sicora defeated Parul Verma 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5.
Sebastian Gallego had the Gophers’ biggest win, blanking his No. 3 singles opponent, Carlos Valdenebro 6-0, 6-0. Adam Altepeter finished off Minnesota’s win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Carles Pons Escanilla at No. 6.
The Gophers nearly shutout the Colonels, but Eastern Kentucky’s Alex Das Izquierdo rallied to edge Ishay Hadash 4-6, 6-2, (10-8) in a third set super tiebreaker.
Minnesota will play the rest of the month of February at home with seven straight matches at the Baseline Tennis Center, beginning with a match against Wisconsin-Green Bay on Friday at 3 p.m.
