Minnesota won three singles matches, but dropped all three doubles matches to lose its Big Ten opener 4-3 against Illinois. No. 14-ranked senior Tom Chicoine defeated No. 13-ranked Oliver Freelove 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position to put Minnesota ahead early. Illinois won the next three matches. At No. 2 singles, Illinois' Cary Franklin defeated sophomore Tyson Parry 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3).
Freshman Thomas Haug won his third consecutive match defeating Jakub Teply 7-6 (5), 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Juinor Martin Michalowski defeated Royce Ramey 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Minnesota will play Northwestern tomorrow at noon in Evanston, Ill.
