After a successful fall slate, the Minnesota men’s tennis team looks to open its spring season this weekend when it hosts its first match on Sunday, Jan. 20 at Baseline Tennis Center. The Maroon and Gold, who recently received the No. 35 ranking in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, will serve up the competition against Northern Illinois at 4:00 p.m. CT.
The late afternoon match-up will be only the second time in school history that the Gophers have faced the Huskies on the court. The Gophers lead the all-time series, 1-0, after winning the first meeting back in 1989. Minnesota prevailed with a 5-2 victory.
The Gophers have a lot of talent returning to the court. In addition to the team ranking, three Gophers received notification among ITA’s singles and doubles individual rankings lists. Senior Rok Bonin and sophomore Leandro Toledo are poised to lead the team in individual competition after being picked as No. 49 and No. 63, respectively. Sophomore Mathieu Froment rounds out the three Gophers that earned a ranked accolade, sharing the No. 24 spot with doubles partner Bonin.
