Minnes The Golden Gopher men's tennis team completed day one of the Big Ten Singles Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Saturday. The event continues Sunday and will be completed on Monday.
Minnesota sophomore Harsh Mankad, the tournament's top-seed, advanced into the round of 16 with straight-set victories over Mike Hodge of Michigan State and Petar Mandic of Iowa. He will face ninth-seeded Michael Calkins of Illinois on Sunday.
Fellow sophomore Eric Robertson also advanced into the round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Michael Jonckheere of Michigan State and a 6-3, 6-2 upset of eighth-seeded Brad Erickson from Northwestern. He will face ninth-seeded Jamie Gresh of Penn State on Sunday.
Senior Tyson Parry advanced to the second round with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Penn State's Matt Nielsen, but was ousted by Illinois' Mike Kosta, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Senior Jon Svensson also advanced to the second round, but had to retire due to injury against fourth-seeded Henry Beam of Michigan. He captured the first-set in a tie-breaker, before dropping the second set and retiring in the third. Senior Jorge Duenas was defeated in the first round by Indiana's Rahman Smiley, 6-3, 6-4
