Men's Tennis Australia Blog: Day Six
Jan. 11, 2018

MELBOURNE, Australia – The Gopher Men’s Tennis team is spending over a week training in Australia this month. During their stay, members of the team will be writing blog updates to keep fans posted on the team’s activities throughout the trip. Today, senior Felix Corwin described the team’s first off day of their trip.

Today was a fantastic day for the Gophers. After a few days of practicing in the Australian sun, we earned the reward of a day off from tennis to explore different parts of the city and gain new experiences.

The day began with some self-made bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches in the apartments. In the late morning, the team gathered at the main floor of the apartment building and we got in Ubers headed for the beach. After a twenty-minute drive, the combination of 90-degree heat, cool, salty sea water, and a lively and crowded beach put us in a great state of relaxation and fun. The early day excursion was just the beginning, though.

After a couple of hours in the heat at the beach, we were ready for something different. After making our way back to the apartments in the city, the boys split up and did their own things. A few of the guys went down to the Melbourne Tennis Center to watch the matches being played in the Australian Open. They scoped out some familiar faces in competition. For example, the guys cheered on former college players Cameron Norrie and Jamie Loeb in their matches. The professionals carried on throughout another day full of tennis, just from a different perspective this time around.

As for the rest of us, we took the open afternoon to check out the historic Chapel Street. This commercial district just a few minutes from downtown is filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants. It was more good, relaxing fun perusing around the shops with the guys. All of us that were there will forever have that image of Matic Spec gingerly emerging from the dressing room in a pair of pants that were much too tight every which way. Matic knew they were not the right fit, but he wanted to give us a good laugh. Around six in the evening the shops were closing and the sun had taken its toll on both our energy and our skin, so we drove back to the apartments.

With that, the evening wound down and the Gophers rested up for another great day of training to come.
