Gopher Invitational: Maroon | Gold
ITA Fall Nationals: Singles | Doubles | Doubles Consolation
The Gopher Men’s Tennis program wrapped play at two tournaments over the weekend. With its three top athletes in California for the ITA National Fall Championships, Minnesota claimed a third-place finish at the Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
The pairing of freshman Jackson Allen and Marino Alpeza fell in just one round of the unique doubles tournament, featuring a best-of-three-match set-up with a doubles and two singles match between competitors in each round. Allen and Alpeza fell in their doubles match against Dartmouth, 6-3, Sunday, but bounced back with victories in singles play. Allen defeated David Horneffer, 6-4, 3-6 (10-8), while Alpeza defeated Roko Glasnovic, 6-2, 6-4.
Freshman Vlab Lobak and junior Justyn Levin reached the finals of the consolation bracket, falling to Peter Conklin and Casey Ross of Dartmouth, despite a victory in doubles play. Junior Josip Krstanovic picked up a singles victory for his team in the back draw on Sunday, but he and sophomore Eli Ogilvy fell to a pairing from Wisconsin in the round.
In the round robin gold bracket, rookie Kaleb Dobbs teamed with fellow freshman Jorge Nunez of Denver due to an odd number of entries. While they swept their Saturday third round match-up, the duo would would earn just one victory on Sunday, defeating Nathan Griffin and Paul Gota of Notre Dame in doubles play, 6-2.
At ITA Fall Nationals, seniors Matic Spec and Felix Corwin reached the consolation semifinals on Saturday, falling to a duo from Oregon. Sophomore Stefan Milicevic reached the second round of the singles bracket on Thursday.
