Gopher Invitational: Maroon | Gold
ITA Fall Nationals: Doubles Consolation

Seniors Felix Corwin and Matic Spec continued play at the ITA Fall National Championships in Palm Desert, California on Friday while the rest of the Minnesota Men’s Tennis program opened play at the 2017 Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center.

After receiving a walkover into Friday’s quarterfinals, Corwin and Spec made the most of the opportunity, knocking off Texas Tech’s Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya 6-3, 6-4. The duo now awaits the winner of the last consolation quarterfinal match between Virginia Tech and Oregon in the semifinals.

Back home at the Gopher Invite, the Maroon & Gold picked up a pair of sweeps in the first round of the Maroon Draw. Freshman Jackson Allen and junior Marino Alpeza defeated Eric Morris and Jesse Ruder-Hook of Denver, 7-5, in doubles play. Allen then knocked off Morris, 6-4, 6-0, while Alpeza defeated Ruder-Hook, 6-2, 7-5. Junior Josip Krstanovic and sophomore Eli Ogilvy also swept the first round against Kyle Butters and Tim Heslin, winning doubles, 7-6 (5). Ogilvy knocked off Heslin, 6-4, 6-3, while Krstanovic defeated Butters when he was forced to retire due to injury with the score 2-2 in the first set.

Freshman Vlad Lobak saw the first action of his Gopher career. After he and junior Justin fell 2-1 in their first round outing, the duo bounced back in the consolation quarterfinals, taking an early lead with a 6-1 win over Slava Shainyan and Egbert Weverink of Utah. Allen/Alpeza and Krstanovic/Ogilvy also took early leads in the quarterfinals.

The singles matches from the doubles second round will open play on Saturday. Please note that the first matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. rather than 8 a.m. as originally reported.
