Minnesota men’s tennis sophomore Ruben Weber won the team’s only match on the final day of play at the Big Ten Singles Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind. Weber defeated Chase Tomlins of Iowa in straight sets to improve his fall record to 6-2.
After falling in the opening round of both the ITA Central Region Championships and this weekend’s Big Ten Tournament, Weber went undefeated in both consolation draws.
The Alzey, Germany native began action in the consolation bracket with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the Nebraska’s Court Clark. He then eliminated Michigan State’s Will Davis 7-6 (3), 2-1 (retire) to move on to the Round of 16 where he dispatched Tomlins 6-2, 6-4.
The Gophers pick up play next Friday when the team welcomes Penn, Dartmouth, Princeton, Denver, Western Michigan, and DePaul to the Baseline Tennis Center Oct. 31-Nov. 3 for the Gopher Invitational. Minnesota will wrap up fall play the following weekend at the Dick Vitale Lakewood Ranch Invitational in Tampa, Fla.
Milicevic Earns ITA Central Region Award
The University of Minnesota’s Stefan Milicevic was named the ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year Monday while the team was awarded the ITA Central Region Community Service Award.
