The University of Oklahoma swept the Men’s ITA Central Regional Championship today in the final day of competition. The Sooners took home the top prize in both singles and doubles events to advance to the ITA Nationals.
Minnesota’s No. 4 Leandro Toledo was poised to take on Oklahoma’s No. 2 Guillermo Alcorte for the championship battle. Toledo put on the pressure early, playing an aggressive net game that put him up 2-0 in the first set. Alcorte answered by vamping up the competition. Each game was close in score but Toledo ultimately lost momentum, making minor errors that would cost him crucial points. Alcorte went on to win the singles championships by scores of 6-4, 6-1.
An hour later, Alcorte joined his partner Axel Alvarez in the doubles championship match where they faced Drake’s Anis Ghorbel and James Mckie. Down 0-4 in the match, Ghorbel and Mckie fought their way back to a 6-4 score, challenging Oklahoma every step of the way. In the end, Oklahoma would become victorious again, winning 8-4 to claim second title of the day.
