As another day at the Men’s ITA Regional Championship came to a close, competition was tighter than ever. Members of the Minnesota men’s tennis team continued to showcase a threatening presence on the court, advancing one individual and one pair into the event quarterfinals.
Of the six Gophers that earned sports in the singles round of 32, three advanced to compete in the round of 16. No. 4 Leandro Toledo, Mathieu Froment, and No. 6 Rok Bonin each moved on with victories to start the day. Toledo defeated Trevor Hortsmann (Oklahoma State) by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Froment battled through a three-set match, including a tiebreaker in the first, to upset the No. 5 seed Dane Webb (Oklahoma). Bonin easily handled Arkansas’ Greg Lehmann for a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
In the round of 16, Toledo would be the only Gopher to end victorious, defeating Jonas Diercrx of Iowa (6-2, 6-3) to solidify his spot in the quarterfinals.
Toledo kept his tournament record intact with added success in the doubles competition. He and Bonin finished day three with an 8-4 win over Martjin Admiraal and Brandon Florez (Southern Illinois-Carbondale).
The remaining participants move to compete in the quarterfinal rounds tomorrow, beginning with the singles main draw at 9 a.m.
