The Minnesota men’s tennis team continued play at the 2013 USTA/ITA Central Region Championship in Tulsa Okla. Saturday. The Gophers went 0-1 in the singles main draw, 2-1 in the first round of singles consolation, and 1-1 in the second round of the same bracket. One of two doubles tandems remaining advanced.
In the same round, Manfred Jeske and Mike Nott of Arkansas eliminated Eric Freuh and Leandro Toledo.
The No. 53-ranked Toledo, the only Minnesota player remaining after the Round of 64 concluded Friday, fell in his second-round match to host Tulsa’s Dylan McCloskey in a tight match, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3).
The Gophers found more success in the consolation singles draw, however.
Froment and Ruben Weber each won in the first round. Weber topped Creighton’s Brandon Lee in straight sets, while Froment defeated Pat Kella of St. Louis in a super tiebreaker. Froment fell in the second round, but Weber moved on again with a win 7-5, 6-3 win over Jovan Parlic 7-5, 6-3.
Singles and doubles play will resume Sunday. The tournament will come to an end Monday.
Next up on the docket for Minnesota are the Big Ten Singles Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. from Oct. 25-27.
