Ohio State Too Much as Minnesota Falls 7-0

Final Stats

The Minnesota men's tennis team, ranked No. 37 in the nation, was put to the test today in Columbus, Ohio against the No. 5 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Despite a valiant effort, the Gophers fell, 7-0, to OSU. The deficit marked only the second loss in Big Ten competition as the team moves to 5-2 in conference action (9-9 overall). The Buckeyes stay perfect in conference play with a 23-2 record (7-0).

Ohio State hurried through the singles, sweeping the field to claim the point. At the first position, No. 13 pair Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith defeated Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment, 8-2. From the second spot, Ille Van Engelen and Devin McCarthy, OSU's No. 27 duo, downed Rok Bonin and Juan Pablo Ramirez 8-1. Blaz Rola and Hunter Callahan topped off the round with an 8-2 win over Leandro Toledo and Eric Frueh.

The Buckeyes came out hot in singles to complete the sweep of the match-up. All five of Ohio State's individually-ranked athletes notched victories against the Gopher squad, while the lone unranked player closed out the match with a win of his own. First to finish was the third singles where No. 83 McCarthy topped Hamburg (6-1, 6-3). Ones followed closely with No. 13 Blaz Rola defeating No. 41 Rok Bonin (6-2, 6-0). Froment fell to Smith (6-1, 6-3) to give the Buckeyes the official victory, while Ramirez dropped a match to Chris Diaz (6-2, 6-1).

Toledo came closest to victory for the Maroon and Gold. Up against the No. 4-ranked player in the nation Kobelt, Toledo pushed hard and challenged throughout, but ultimately fell short of a win. Toledo lost in two sets by scores of 6-4 and 7-5. Sixth singles closed out the competition. Gopher Ruben Weber rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the first set against Constantin Christ to play a tighter game in the second, but Christ came out on top with a 7-5 finish.



Next weekend Minnesota comes back to Baseline Tennis Center for matches against Indiana and Purdue. The Gophers will meet the Hoosiers on Friday, April 12 at 3 p.m. and the Boilermakers on April 14 at noon.
