The No. 37 Minnesota men’s tennis team fell in a tightly-contested match against No. 56 Arkansas today at the Dills Indoor Tennis Facility in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks were victorious by a score of 4-3 after back-and-forth action on the day. With the loss, the Gophers fall to 1-4 on the season. Arkansas improves to 7-1.
Arkansas earned the first point of the day after winning two of the three doubles matches. Rok Bonin and Mathieu Froment, who are currently ranked as the No. 24 duo in the country, saw an unexpected loss to Arkansas’ duo of Mike Nott and Manfred Jeske. Nott and Jeske overpowered the Gopher pair to an 8-2 score. Brendan Ruddock and Jack Hamburg combined at the No. 3 doubles position and worked to notch the 8-4 victory over Mike Ward and Gregoire Lehmann. Arkansas responded and clinched the point with a Hall Fess/Santiago Munoz win over Leandro Toledo and Juan Pablo Ramirez.
Minnesota managed to grab its three points on the singles side of competition. Toledo, Froment and Ruddock each earned victories at the second, third, and fifth positions, respectively. Toledo was the first to finish with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Jeske. Both Ruddock and Froment came back from first set losses to down their opponents in three. Ruddock bested Jovan Parlic by scores of 2-6, 6-1, and 6-2. Froment bounced back to win by scores of 4-6, 6-2, and 7-6.
