MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gopher Men's Tennis program opened up a big sports weekend in the Twin Cities with a 7-0 victory over Sacramento State at Baseline Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

After claiming the doubles point for the third time in four matches this season, Minnesota (2-2) looked to maintain that momentum with first-set victories in all six singles matches, but Sacramento State (0-3) proved its mettle by forcing a third set in 5-of-6 matches.

Junior Josip Krstanovic, playing second singles for the first time in his career after senior Felix Corwin was a late scratch from the line-up, exemplified this for the Gophers, winning the first set 6-0 before falling 7-6 (5) in the second and needed a comeback to win 6-4 in the third.

"After a really good first set, I think I lost a little bit of focus," Krstanovic said after the match. "He took his chances, I didn't really take mine, and unfortunately, I lost a set. I came back in the third after being a break down. I tried my best and today, it went for the better."

Stefan Milicevic picked up his first victory at the top of the Maroon & Gold lineup this spring, defeating Mikus Losbergs 7-5, 2-6, 6-2. Marino Alpeza won Minnesota's lone two-set victory, defeating Donald Hall 6-4, 6-2. He and Eli Ogilvy were victorious in doubles, 6-2, while Milicevic and freshman Jackson Allen defeated Hall and Dom Miller, 6-3 for the Gophers.

Allen and fellow rookie Vlad Lobak each picked up their first collegiate singles victories in dual play. Allen defeated Kasparas Zemaitelis 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in fourth singles while Lobak was a late replacement at sixth singles, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in his spring debut.

"Well, I didn't think it was our sharpest performance but it's a different kind of match than what we've been playing," said head coach Geoff Young following the match. "As far as that goes, we can take something from it. We're going to need to get better in some areas."
