The No. 13 University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team will play host to Wisconsin in a Big Ten border battle Friday night at University Aquatic Center. The Gophers will take on the Badgers beginning at 5:00 p.m., with the dual also serving at Senior Night.
The Minnesota men are off to a 0-1 start after falling to reigning Big Ten Champion Michigan in their lone meet of the year. The Gophers last competed in an intrasquad meet at home, where the Gold defeated the Maroon in a high-level competition.
Wisconsin enters the meet with a 3-1 dual record on the season, with their only loss coming at the hands of the Wolverines as well.
Friday night will not only be a battle against the Badgers, but will also serve as night to honor the seniors. Minnesota has seven seniors on its roster, all of who have made an immense impact on the program over the past three years. Listed below are each of the senior men and a few of their major accomplishments thus far as a Gopher.
Jared Anderson out of Baxter, Minn., is a breaststroke and individual medley swimmer who ranks fifth all-time at Minnesota in the 100 breaststroke (53.56). He has competed at the Big Ten Championships all three years, earning his best finish of fifth place in the 100 breast his sophomore year. Anderson is majoring in journalism and English.
Hrvoje Capan is a four time All-American out of Zagreb, Croatia as a freestyle swimmer for the Gophers. Capan swam in the 200, 400 and 800 free relay at the NCAA Championships his junior year as well as the 800 free relay as a freshman. The senior is majoring in business and marketing education.
Larry Formosa is a freestyle and butterfly swimmer out of Homer Glen, Ill. Formosa shined last year at the Big Ten Championship where he swam in the eighth-place 200 medley relay, as well as the 100 and 200 fly. He is planning to graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Ben Griggs is a senior out of Fargo, N.D. He swims sprint freestyle for the Gophers and is a two time All-American after placing 12th in the 200 free relay and 15th in the 400 free relay at last year’s NCAA Championships. Griggs is majoring in psychology.
Josh Hall is a breaststroke swimmer from Wausau, Wis. The health and wellness major has competed at the Big Ten Championships every year, earning his top finish of third place in the 200 breast his junior season.
Sean Nesheim out of Everett, Wash., is a freestyle swimmer for the Gophers that swam in the Big Ten Championships his sophomore and junior seasons. Nesheim is majoring in business and marketing education.
Mikey Ross is a diver out of Wilmette, Ill., who began his collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin. After coming to Minnesota his junior year, Ross earned All-America honors in platform diving and holds the University of Minnesota school record in 3-meter diving with a score of 423.50. The senior is majoring in sociology.
