The Big Ten Conference Weekly Awards were announced Tuesday and Minnesota earned two of the three honors. Daryl Turner received Swimmer of the Week while Manny Pollard was named Diver of the Week. Both accolades were awarded after Minnesota’s winning performance against Arizona State University last weekend Oct. 5, 2013. This was the first Big Ten Weekly award of both Turner’s and Pollard’s career.
Turner, a freshman, debuted in his first collegiate dual meet by claiming first-place finishes in all four events competed in. He won the 1oo-yard backstroke (48.43 seconds), 100 freestyle (44.65), 200 freestyle relay (1:23.08), and the 200 medley relay (1:29.27). His 100 backstroke finished with a time that was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
The last Minnesota Swimmer of the Week was Kyler Van Swol on Nov. 6, 2012.
Sophomore Pollard placed first in both the one-meter and three-meter dives. He earned scores of 341.70 in the one-meter and 370.65 in the three-meter, both high enough scores to qualify him for the NCAA Zone Diving standards.
The last Diver of the Week was Mikey Ross on Feb. 12, 2013.
