MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Minnesota's men's and women's swimming & diving programs will open their 2013-14 competitive schedules with the Alumni Meet at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27 at the University Aquatics Center.
As part of the festivities that evening, four former swimming & diving standouts for the Golden Gophers will be inducted into the Minnesota Aquatics Hall of Fame. The honorees are Jeff Hackler (Class of 2003), Laurie Nelson Davis (Class of 1994), Tanya Schuh Modelli (Class of 1997) and Bernie Zeruhn (Class of 1996).
Combined, this class of inductees earned 49 All-America awards and claimed 27 Big Ten event titles during their outstanding careers.
Jeff Hackler was a 15-time All-America recipient during 2000-03, specializing in the breaststroke. Hackler was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2000, and he still holds Minnesota varsity short course records for the 100-meter breast (1:01.10), 200-meter breast (2:09.81) and as part of the 400-meter medley relay (3:36.20). During his career, he earned Big Ten titles in the 100 breast (2002-03), 200 breast (2000, 2002), and as part of the 200 medley relay (2001-03) and 400 medley relay (2000-03). Hacker still holds the Minnesota program's fourth-fastest time in the 200 breast (1:56.25) and its sixth-fastest in the 100 breast (53.24).
Laurie Nelson Davis was an eight-time All-American as a diver for the Gophers during 1991-94. A member of Minnesota's Athletics Hall of Fame (inducted in 2000), Nelson was a four-time All-American as a platform diver, while twice earning All-America laurels in both one-meter and three-meter diving. Nelson was Big Ten champion in one-meter diving during 1992 and claimed conference titles on both three-meter and platform diving in 1993. She was named Minnesota's most valuable performer three-straight seasons (1992-94). Nelson also was a standout in the classroom, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors three times (1992-94), while receiving Minnesota's Top 5 Academic Award in 1993 and the Outstanding Student-Athlete Award four times. She still holds Top 10 efforts in seven diving events, including Minnesota's best-ever score for platform diving (11 dives).
Tanya Schuh Modelli was a nine-time All-American at Minnesota during 1994-97. Schuh earned All-America recognition in the 100 butterfly during 1995 and 1996, while taking home All-America honors as a member of the Gophers' 200 and 400 medley relays as a senior in 1997. Schuh also earned honorable mention All-America recognition five times. A four-year letterwinner, Schuh captured back-to-back Big Ten championships in the 100 fly (1996-97) and 200 medley relay (1996-97), while also claiming conference titles in the 200 fly (1996) and 400 medley relay (1997). She was named Minnesota's most valuable performer in 1996, and she was the recipient of the Dorothy Lestina Sheppard Award in 1997. She still holds Minnesota's sixth-fastest time in the 50 butterfly (25.43).
Bernie Zeruhn was a 17-time All-American for the Golden Gophers during 1993-96. A four-time letterwinner, Zeruhn was part of six Big Ten title events for Minnesota during the 1996 season, while adding a seventh Big Ten crown in 1994. His 1996 performance at the Big Ten Championships included winning the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, the 200 butterfly, and swimming legs on the Gophers' winning 400 and 800 free relays and on the 400 medley relay.
