MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - Two members of the swimming and diving programs at the University of Minnesota have earned spots on the 2013-14 USA Swimming National Teams, as announced earlier this week.
Junior Kiera Janzen of the women's team and senior Kyler Van Swol of the men's team each qualified due to strong performances at the 2013 U.S. Open Swimming Championships, which took place July 30 through August 3 in Irvine, Calif.
Van Swol is from Frankfort, Ill., and is a graduate of Lincoln-Way North High School. He earned a spot on the USA Swimming Men's National Team by finishing fourth in a time of 52.32 seconds during a very fast 100 Butterfly finals heat at the U.S. Open.
He is a four-time All-America recipient for the Golden Gophers, and ranks third all-time on Minnesota's list of top performances in the 100 fly.
Janzen is from White Bear Lake, and she graduated from Cretin-Derham Hall High School. She earned a spot on the USA Swimming Women's National Team by winning the 200 freestyle at the U.S. Open with a time of 1:58.28.
She earned All-America honors in three events at the 2013 NCAA Championships, and finished second in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 1650 freestyle and as part of the 800 free relay at the 2013 Big Ten Championships. Each of Janzen's individual event times at the Big Ten Championships were personal bests, and her time of 4:35.70 in the 500 free was a Minnesota program record and the second-fastest time in Big Ten history.
Athletes with the top 6 fastest times, in Olympic Events only, from the combined results of the 2013 Phillips 66/USA Swimming Nationals and World Championship Trials, the 2013 World University Games, the 2013 World Championships, and the 2013 U.S. Open are selected for the National Team.
