Gophers Compete at Speedo Sectionals

MINNEAPOLIS - Five Golden Gopher swimmers won individual titles at the recent Speedo Sectional meet held at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Junior Nick Plachinski brought home a Gopher best three-first place medals. Conner McHugh and Bowen Becker each brought home a pair, while Rae Bullinger and Tevyn Waddell each won one.

Highlighting the weekend, Waddell set a new Gophers' long course meter record in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:00.96. Waddell's first place finish broke the six year record, held previously by Tess Behrens, by .32 seconds.  In the 100 Breaststroke, McHugh was shy .01 seconds from breaking a 10-year Gopher LCM record.

The Gophers' relay squads asserted their dominance over the four day span.  Zoe Avestruz, Kaia Grobe, Isabel Whited and Waddell recorded first-place finishes in the 400 Free and 800 Free Relay, while Rae Bullinger joined Avestruz, Grobe and Waddell to take gold in the 400 Medley Relay. For the men, three different relay squads competed. Recording a first-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay were Peter Lefebvre, Matthew Thomas, McHugh and Becker.

Out of the 24 Gophers competing this past weekend, 17 competed in the "A" finals in at least one event. Minnesota brought home 16 top 3 finishes, 12 which were gold.
