The University of Minnesota swimming and diving program will be well-represented at the 2013 World University Games, as four Golden Gophers will compete at the event which takes place July 10-16 at the Aquatics Palace in Kazan, Russia.
Derek Toomey, Kyler Van Swol, Sarah McCrady and former Gopher Ashley Steenvoorden will each represent the United States in the pool, while Minnesota men's and women's head coach Kelly Kremer will also serve on the USA men's swimming coaching staff.
Toomey will compete in the 50m freestyle and 4x100m freestyle relay and Van Swol will compete in the 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly and 4x100m medley relay. On the women's side, Steenvoorden will compete in the 800m freestyle and 1500m freestyle and McCrady will compete in 10-meter synchronized diving with Purdue's Mackenzie Tweardy.
For the first time, the World University Games will be available to a national television audience in the United States. ESPNU and ESPN3 are set to carry 115 live hours of the event, which features student-athletes aged 17-28. Swimming events will be broadcast live on ESPN3 July 10-16 beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT each day, while the women's diving platform (10-meter) synchronized final will air live on ESPN3 July 12 beginning at 4:50 a.m. CT.
Taking place every two years, the World University Games are an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International Sports Federation (FISU). Swimmers on the 2013 World University Games Team roster were selected based upon their performance at the 2012 U.S. Open Championships. All athletes selected for the team must be at least 17 years old and less than 28 years old on January 1, 2013.
