July 1, 2017

Eleven Golden Gophers competed at the Phillips National Championships this week. Minnesota’s impressive showing at USA Swimming’s World Championships trials event included five program long course records and 10 evening session swims.

Danielle Nack broke her own records in both the 100- and 200-meter butterfly. She placed seventh in the 100 in 58.98 on Thursday. Nack clocked in at 2:13.10 in the 200 during Tuesday’s prelims.
Brooke Zeiger also made an “A” final for the Gophers. She was sixth, Minnesota’s highest finish of the meet, in the 400 individual medley with a 4:44.57 on Thurdsay.

Conner McHugh broke Mike Brown’s 17-year-old record in the 200 breaststroke in prelims, then lowered his time to 2:12.47 to win Wednesday’s “B” final. McHugh also won the “B” final of the 50 breast, with a time of 28.04 on Thursday. He was 10th in Friday’s 100 breast in 1:02.62.

Bowe Becker broke Derek Toomey’s 2013 Minnesota record in the 100-meter freestyle Tuesday with a 49.32 in prelims. He went on to place 13th in 49.46. Becker closed the meet Saturday with a 10th-place finish in the 50 free in 22.25, just .02 off his own program record.

Tevyn Waddell broke Tess Behrens’ 2011 record in Wednesday prelims and broke it again in 2:10.86, good for 11th place. A time of 28.90 in Thursday’s 50 back earned Waddell 14th place.

Lindsey Horejsi had one of the Gophers’ evening swims, placing 15th in the 50 breast in 32.02.

Also competing at U.S. Nationals were Zoe Avestruz, Rae Bullinger, Erin Emery, Michael Messner, Chantal Nack.
