Former Minnesota swimmer Alex Wold narrowly missed qualifying for the final of the 400-meter individual medley to lead Minnesota's efforts on the first day of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials Monday at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb. Along with Wold, seven additional current and former Gophers took the blocks on the first day of the eight-day Trials.
Wold posted a ninth-place finish in the 400-meter IM with a time of 4:19.84, just missing a chance at tonight's final and a shot at the U.S. Olympic Team. Wold finished just a half-second shy of the finals, as the eighth-place finisher clocked a time of 4:19.33.
Also competing in the 400-meter IM were former Gopher Russell Payne and sophomore Brandon Hatanaka, who finished in 57th and 88th places overall with times of 4:29.00 and 4:34.01, respectively.
The Gophers had an impressive showing in the 100-meter breaststroke, as senior Jared Anderson won his heat in a time of 1:02.65 to place 31st overall in the event. Fellow senior Josh Hall was not far behind, as he clocked a time of 1:03.02 to finish 36th overall, while sophomore Max Cartwright tied for second in his heat, and placed 68th overall, with a time of 1:04.16.
In his second event of the day, Wold finished 34th in the preliminaries of the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:57.28, followed by sophomore CJ Smith, who placed 42nd overall after winning his heat in 3:57.95. Recent graduate Mike Vernoia posted a time of 4:01.05 to place 72nd overall.
Tomorrow morning's preliminary schedule includes the 200-meter freestyle and the 100-meter backstroke. The evening will included semifinals of both events and the final of the 100-meter breaststroke.
