Gophers Complete TYR Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet

Twelve current and former University of Minnesota swimmers competed at the 2013 TYR Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions in Mission Viejo, Calif., last weekend, with Kyler Van Swol tying American record-holder Tom Shields for first place in the 200 meter butterfly and Ashley Steenvoorden placing second in the 400, 800 and 1500 meter freestyles to US Olympian Chloe Sutton.
Steenvoorden placed second in the 800 meter freestyle with a time of 8:33.24, while junior Kiera Janzen followed in fifth place with a time of 8:48.99. Sophomore Samantha Harding notched a time of 8:54.24 to place 10th in the event.
Steenvoorden and Janzen then added second and fourth place finishes in the 400 meter freestyle with times of 4:10.05 and 4:14.24, respectively. Janzen finished sixth overall in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 2:02.63. Jessica Plant posted an 11th-place finish with a time of 2:02.37, while Steenvoorden secured a time of 2:03.01 to finish 17th overall.
Plant added a time of 4:20.38 in the 400 free to place 11th overall, while Harding following with a 15th-place finish with a time of 4:22.08.
In the men’s 1500 meter freestyle, junior CJ Smith secured a 10th-place finish with a time of 15:55.52, with Logan Redondo finishing 22nd overall with a time of 16:28.89 and Garin Marlow finishing 31st overall in 16:43.40.
CJ Smith added another top-15 finish in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 4:02.05 to place 12th overall, while Redondo was close behind with a 15th-place finish in 4:05.35. Marlow placed 52nd in the prelims with a time of 4:15.54.
Carl Newenhouse finished 24th in the 100 meter freestyle in 53.36, before posting a time of 2:04.46 in the 200 meter backstroke, good for fifth place in the championship final. Sophomore Jimmy Rafter also competed in the 200 meter back, finishing 39th with a time of 2:16.49.
Sophomore Kierra Smith placed 19th in the 200 meter butterfly bonus final with a time of 2:22.32 and senior Kyler Van Swol tied for first place in the 200 meter fly championship final with a time of 2:00.26. Andrew Hartbarger clocked a time of 2:04.06 to place ninth overall.
Van Swol and Redondo posted times of 1:53.88 and 1:55.02, respectively, to place 18th and 21st overall in the 200 meter free finals. Newenhouse finished 27th in 1:56.75, CJ Smith finished 29th in 1:58.32 and Marlow finished 55th in 1:59.68.
Kierra Smith finished fifth in the 200 meter breaststroke finals in 2:31.72, before notching a 12th-place finish in the 100 meter breaststroke finals in 1:13.80. Smith finished out the event with a time of 2:22.03 in the 200 meter IM.
Harding recorded times of 4:56.99 to place 12th in the 400 meter IM finals and 2:21.39 to place 11th in the 200 meter IM finals. Hartbarger also placed in the top-10 in both the 400 IM, with a time of 4:33.67, and the 200 IM, with a time of 2:07.47.
Van Swol finished second overall in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 53.07, while Steenvoorden secured another second-place finish in the 1500 meter freestyle with a time of 16:16.79.
Plant finished 18th overall in the 100 meter backstroke finals with a time of 1:05.07 and Newenhouse registered a time of 57.63 in the event to place fourth overall. Rafter added a 19th-place finish in 1:00.67.
With his time of 8:17.42 in the 800 meter freestyle, CJ Smith placed seventh, while Redondo finished in 8:34.66 to place 20th overall and Marlow finished in 8:47.74 to place 48th overall.
