University of Minnesota head men's and women's swimming and diving coach Kelly Kremer announced Thursday that Derek Toomey and Luke Bushman have been named team captains for the 2013-14 season. Toomey will lead the team for the second-straight season, while Bushman will serve as captain for the first time as a junior.
The pair helped the Gophers place fourth at the 2013 Big Ten Championships and post a top-20 finish at the 2013 NCAA Championships. Toomey and Bushman will lead an experienced group in 2013-14 that is set to include six returners from last year's NCAA roster.
Toomey is coming off the most successful season of his career as a junior, where he earned All-America First Team honors with a third-place finish in the 50 free at the NCAA Championships. Toomey also earned All-America accolades in the 100 free and as a member of the 200 free and 400 free relay teams.
Bushman concluded his sophomore season, his first with the Gophers, with a sixth-place finish as a member of the 200 medley relay and a 16th-place finish in the 400 IM at the Big Ten Championships. During the season, Bushman claimed five events titles.
