MINNEAPOLIS - Two Minnesota men's swimmers and all five of the Golden Gophers' relays have been invited to compete at the NCAA Championships March 21-24 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Diving is currently competing at the NCAA Zone D Championship, as of March 6. Nick Yang is the lone Gopher diver to have punched his ticket to the NCAA meet.
"Competing in the NCAA Championship is an honor," said head coach Kelly Kremer. "I know our men, led by Bowen [Becker] and Conner [McHugh] are excited to have this opportunity at home!"
Two of the top swimmers in the nation are set to represent Minnesota in its home pool for an NCAA meet that will see pool records broken in an exciting four days of swimming. Senior Conner McHugh and junior Bowen Becker hold top-5 seeding times in their respective events.
McHugh, competing in his final NCAA meet, returns in search of making the 100 and 200 breaststroke championship finals for the first time in his collegiate career. Last year McHugh finished 11th in the 100 breast and 12th in the 200 breast. Facing similar Big Ten foes in Indiana's Ian Finnerty and Levi Brock, McHugh holds the three seed in the 100 breast with a time of 51.68. In the 200 breast, McHugh's A standard seed time of 1:51.41 is the third fastest time.
Becker, heading to his third consecutive NCAA meet, is in search of reaching the finals in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. Becker is scheduled to be in some of the top races at this year's NCAA meet, including the 50 free. Becker has the second fastest seed time of 18.69 just behind Florida's Caeleb Dressell. In the 100 free, with a seed time of 41.61 Becker comes in as the fifth fastest time.
The Gophers are also sending all five relays to the NCAA Championship with both a veteran and young squad. Highlighting the relay events is the 200 and 400 medley relay events in which the Gophers recorded new school record times at the Big Ten meet. Matthew Thomas, McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Becker swam the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:24.25, while Tom Donker, McHugh, Thomas and Becker swam the 400 medley relay in 3:06.90.
