The No. 8 University of Minnesota swimming and diving team hosted the opening night of the Jean Freeman Invite on Friday at the University Aquatic Center. The Gophers earned six first-place finishes and remained in control throughout the entire meet.
The meet was a small one, as this is the first year of Minnesota hosting, but it will grow in the years to come. Only a few members of the Gopher team competed, but when they did, they proved their skills.
The Gopher men placed one and two in the 200 free relay. The A relay, made up of Derek Toomey, Ben Griggs, Felix Samuels and Sean Nesheim, won the event with a time of 1:21.49.
Vince Radecke, Kyler Van Swol and Greg Norsten all swam in the final heat of the 500 free. Van Swol won the event with a time of 4:33.40 and Norsten came in third at 4:41.14.
Jessica Plant was the only Gopher to swim in the women’s 200 IM, earning a first place finish with a time of 2:05.20.
On the men’s side, eight Gophers competed in the 200 IM and dominated the race. Max Cartwright finished first (1:55.54), Ben Griggs in second (1:56.84) and Larry Formosa in fourth (1:58.91).
Heidi Busack swam the 50 free for the Minnesota women, finishing in first place with a time of 23.92.
In the 50 free for the men, the Gophers came in the two, three and four spots. Samuels earned the second place finish at 20.83, followed by Nesheim (21.03) and Niklas Brinck (21.35).
In the final event of the night, the Minnesota men’s 400 medley relay claimed first place honors, finishing in 3:22.84.
The Jean Freeman Invite will continue tomorrow with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. and finals taking place at 6 p.m.
