Seven Gophers Earn All-America Accolades

The University of Minnesota placed 22nd with a total of 29 points at the 2014 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. The Gopher roster included Derek Toomey, Kyler Van Swol, CJ Smith, along with six freshman including: Jakub Maly, Daryl Turner, Matt Barnard, Paul Fair, Nick Hatanaka, and Ian Gordon.
The Gophers suffered some setbacks throughout the week, including Matt Barnard's injury during three-meter diving, which prevented him from competing in platform. However, the team broke down two school records over three days.

Junior CJ Smith competed at his third-straight mile swim at the NCAAs. Smith held on for 16th place with a time of 14:56.09.
During prelims, Derek Toomey raced a 42.49 to tie for the 11th seed going into finals.
In his last race as a Golden Gopher, Derek Toomey placed 16th in the 100 freestyle, with a finals time of 43.24.
Senior Kyler Van Swol took down the 200 fly record during prelims with a 1:43.37 for the 13th seed headed into finals.
As his last race for Minnesota, Kyler finished with a time of 1:44.67 for 16th place.

200 Medley Relay
Jakub Maly qualified for tonight's finals, seeded 11th, in the 400 IM after a personal record time of 3:44.17.
During finals, freshman Maly finished with a time of 3:46.97 for 15th place.
Senior Kyler Van Swol went 46.41 during prelims of the 100 fly for 18th place. Kyler currently holds the Minnesota school record in the event, with a best time of 46.16.
Freshman Matt Barnard represented the Gophers on the 3-meter boards this afternoon, totaling 317.35 points in the event for 30th place. Going into the sixth round, Matt was in 8th place, and unfortunately hit the board during his dive. While receiving medical attention, Barnard appeared to be in good spirits.
The Gophers competed in five events during prelims, sending the 200 free relay and 50 free to finals.
200 Free Relay
During prelims, the relay team of Derek Toomey, Daryl Turner, Paul Fair and Ian Gordon kicked off the NCAA Championships with a prelim time of 1:17.44, seeding them 9th for finals. Derek Toomey became the first Big Ten Conference swimmer ever to break under 19 seconds, finishing with a split of 18.95.
The Gophers placed 13th in the 200 free relay finals with a time of 1:18.42.
Big Ten Freshman of the Year Jakub Maly set a new personal record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:44.76 for 27th place. Maly is only .12 seconds away from knocking down the Minnesota school record in the event.
Senior captain Derek Toomey established a 19.10 during the 50 free prelims to be seeded 7th in the finals.
During finals Toomey matched his Big Ten Championship Title time 19.05 during the 50 free finals for fourth place in the event.

Matt Barnard competed in the 1-meter diving event this afternoon, adding up a total of 281.00 points for 31st place.
