MINNEAPOLIS – Eric Schierhorn has been tabbed the NCAA Third Star of the Week and the Big Ten First Star of the Week after guiding the No. 4 Gopher Hockey program to its second sweep in a row over the weekend.
A native of Anchorage, Alaska, Schierhorn repeated as the Big Ten First Star of the Week by making 46 saves on 47 shots in Minnesota’s series sweep of Michigan State at 3M Arena at Mariucci. The junior made 25 saves in Friday’s 3-1 win over the Spartans and followed up with 21 saves in Saturday’s 4-0 shutout victory. The series finale stands as Schierhorn’s 50th career win and 10th career shutout.
The two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year is the 12th Minnesota goalie to win 50 career games and currently ranks tied for 10th in program history.
Schierhorn, who has started 85-straight games for the Maroon & Gold, has now allowed a goal or less in each of the last four games as well as five of the last six contests (all five games were Gopher victories). He leads the Big Ten and ranks ninth nationally in both save percentage (.933) and goals against average (1.80) – both statistics are also career bests for the netminder.
Behind Schierhorn’s play in net, the Gophers have now won four straight as well as six of the last seven.
The Gophers head to Michigan next weekend for a two-game Big Ten series in Ann Arbor. Single-game tickets, season tickets and flexible Pick-Your-Packs are currently available at GopherSports.com, by calling 1-800-U-Gopher or by stopping by the ticket office at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
