MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - The four-time Big Ten regular-season champion Gopher Hockey program has been tabbed as the conference favorite in the 2017-18 Big Ten Hockey Preseason Coaches' Poll while four members of the Maroon & Gold were among the 17-player Preseason Watch List.

Team captain Tyler Sheehy was one of two Big Ten players selected as a unanimous pick while he was joined on the list by Ryan Lindgren, Rem Pitlick and newcomer Casey Mittelstadt.

Coming off the program's fourth-straight Big Ten regular-season title and sixth-straight overall regular-season conference title (an NCAA record), the Gophers were selected first in the preseason conference poll. Big Ten newcomer Notre Dame was selected second followed by Wisconsin, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State.

A native of Burnsville, Minn., Sheehy returns to the Gophers roster after one of the top individual seasons in recent years. The junior forward was named the Big Ten Player of the Year, a First Team All-American and a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award after notching a career high 53 points (20 goals, 33 assists) - the most points in a season by a Gopher in the last decade.

A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Lindgren will serve as an alternate captain this year as a sophomore. The defenseman was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team last year with seven points (one goal, six assists) and 50 blocked shots in 32 games. Additionally, he helped the U.S. National Junior Team go unbeaten to win the IIHF World Junior Championships in Canada.

A native of Plymouth, Minn., Pitlick also represented the Gophers on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team last season. The sophomore forward notched 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) in 36 games to finish fifth on Minnesota's roster in scoring and first among team rookies. Pitlick was named the recipient of Minnesota's Frank Pond Rookie of the Year Award.

A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Mittelstadt joins the Gophers after a successful prep career at Eden Prairie High School. The forward was drafted eighth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft - making Mittelstadt the Gophers' highest draft pick since 2006. He also earned the 2017 Mr. Hockey Award and repeated as the Associated Press Player of the Year and a First Team All-State honoree.

The Gophers host Alberta in exhibition action on Sunday, Oct. 1. Single-game tickets, season tickets and flexible Pick-Your-Packs are currently available at MyGopherSports.com, by calling 1-800-U-Gopher or by stopping by the ticket office at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
