MINNEAPOLIS – Garrett Raboin has joined the Gopher Hockey staff as an assistant coach, Bob Motzko announced on Thursday. Raboin, who spent the last six seasons with Motzko at St. Cloud State, will begin his role at Minnesota immediately.
“Garrett is one of the true up-and-coming star coaches in today’s game, and I couldn’t be happier to have him join our program,” Motzko said. “We’re fortunate to have him on our staff as an assistant coach, and our players and our program will benefit greatly from his enthusiasm and passion for the sport of hockey.”
In his six years with the Huskies, Raboin helped St. Cloud State to five NCAA tournament berths including a Frozen Four appearance in 2013. The program also claimed three regular-season conference championships including last year’s NCHC Penrose Cup along with the 2016 NCHC playoff title. Raboin has coached six All-Americans – all First Team selections -- in his coaching career including 2013 Hobey Baker Award winner Drew LeBlanc. In addition to his duties at SCSU, Raboin has also served on coaching USA Hockey coaching staffs for a number of development camps.
“I’m excited to join the University of Minnesota and the Gopher Hockey program. I have a lot of respect for this program, its history and its traditions, and I can’t wait to get to work right away,” Raboin said. “I want to thank Coach Motzko for this opportunity. Bob has been a great mentor to me over the years as a player, a coach and a person, and I’m excited to join him here at the ‘U’.”
As a player, Raboin was a three-year captain for St. Cloud State and led the team to three NCAA tournament appearances. A two-time All-WCHA selection, he ranks fourth all-time at SCSU in defensive scoring with 83 points (21 goals, 62 assists). Raboin earned a bachelor’s degree in special education from SCSU in 2010 while adding three WCHA All-Academic Team accolades. He capped his college career as a Lowes Senior Class All-American in 2010 before playing professionally in Europe for two seasons.
A native of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Raboin played high school hockey at Detroit Lakes High School before skating in the USHL with the Lincoln Stars. He and his wife, Emily, have two children – one son, Louie, and one daughter, Malin.
