St. Cloud State Postgame Quotes Head Coach Bob Motzko Opening Statement: "It's great for our program. Our kids have had a long year. I just thought it was a crazy hockey game - 90 some shots on goal. We said it yesterday, what was the game going to come down to. I said Olver, Hanson and Gustafsson for them and Lasch, Roe, and I didn't mention Tony (Mosey) but I should have. That's his 40th point, and that's what it kind of turned out to be. Both goalies played great and made 90 saves. You had to have some key plays (and) some players. These three guys - I'm the biggest guy on stage right now - they got tons of heart with these three guys - just fantastic. I came down to a hockey game and making plays. If you've been around us, that's what we like."
On the relief of St. Cloud State finally getting an NCAA win: "It's such a special tournament - the NCAA tournament. We've gotten very close with our alum. Being in the state of Minnesota, many of our alum are from the state and are around a lot. I don't want to dwell on it, but the texts and the e-mails we get - they want it. We had to separate that because this team is 0-for-0. We needed to find a way to get a win. I'm glad it's over. I made reference to Miami University a few years back. I worked there for six years, and they had gone a long time without any wins in the NCAA tournament until two years ago - I think it was two years ago they got their first win. And that just means so much for a program. Now they've parlayed that a year ago into more. I hope we can be that same type of program."
On his team: "Coaches will that comment about resiliency and liking you team. We really like our team. I'll tell you, there have been a few times this year we've been down on the mat, and they always bounce back."
On what was said during overtime" "We didn't say anything. Our guys have had that this year. When they start playing and we get back on our toes and start playing, we are a pretty good hockey team."
St. Cloud State Junior Forward Garrett Roe On the feeling before overtime: "Going into overtime we knew it was going to be a back and forth game, they hit a couple poles, we hit a couple. They have talented players that can score anytime so you got to be conscious about that. But at the same time, we had a little momentum, I think we had a little more fans than they did. We were getting pucks on the goalie, we were getting a forecheck, we weren't spending much time in our zone and our "D" were getting the puck up. It was kind of a confidence for us but at the same time we have to be very weary of the other team.
On the offense St. Cloud State showed late: "They had a bunch of chances and I think it just showed the character of our team. Coach mentioned last week how we are resilient. As soon as they tied it up we knew it was back to work and getting chances. We wanted to score, we wanted to win that game and I think we weren't going to stop until we did."
St. Cloud State Junior Forward Tony Mosey On the game winning goal in overtime: "It's huge to finally get that monkey off of our back. That same play happened earlier and I missed a wide open net so I knew if Roe was going to give it to me again I had to put it in. We had a couple power plays in overtime and we were bound to put one in. Fortunately we got one in."
On the feeling before overtime: "When Coach came in, he just told us don't be nervous, play on your toes, we were meant to be here and that kind of gave us a little spark. We were getting traffic to the net and pucks were there all overtime and late in the third, We knew that if we just kept going to the net and grinding their "D" down that one of those opportunities would pay off."
On who Tony would like to play tomorrow : "I don't think it matters this time of year, everyone's got to play good hockey. Whether it's Wisconsin or Vermont we still have to bring our "A" game if we want to win. We are not going to think about that right now, we just need to get our rest and getting back at it tomorrow."
St. Cloud State Senior Ryan Lasch On what happened during the intermission before the second overtime: "We just wanted to come out and stay on our toes, we didn't want to change anything just because it's overtime. We just wanted to stick to our game plan and get the puck deep and we thought if we were able to get the puck deep and work their defensemen, we saw that and got some chances there and buried it."
On the atmosphere of the arena during today's game: "It's exciting. Once we were watching that selection show on Sunday we were excited to come here. We were kind of familiar with the venue and how things work and where we were staying around here. All of that kind of helped us get settled in and acclimated here. I think the fan support was great. I think it's awesome. Compared to previous years, the fans are on our side.
