Head Coach Don Lucia:
On the first Big Ten game and win…
“It’s something that we talked about…getting the first (Big Ten) win ever. It’s something that we stressed throughout the course of the week. So we were really happy for us to come out and get the first (Big Ten) win in the first game.
On Seth Ambroz’s first goal (bouncing in a shot from behind the net)…
“It’s a little bit of a hockey IQ shot. It’s so hard to score goals, and sometimes you see that, and the goalie isn’t on the post. But, it was a good score.”
Redshirt Freshman Forward Connor Reilly:
On today’s game vs. Wisconsin…
“I just wanted to take full advantage of it. I wasn’t trying to do anything too special, but just tried to play my game. Obviously, I am surrounded by some good players in (Nate) Condon and (Justin) Kloos. I tried to keep up my intensity and be strong on the walls.”
On first conference game and win…
“We were so excited coming in. I never got to play in a WCHA game last year, so that obviously wasn’t too fun. But it’s great to get a Big Ten win, and to get the first one ever is pretty exciting for us.”
Sophomore Defenseman Mike Reilly:
On defense in tonight’s game…
“We were still bitter about last Sunday’s result. But, we had a really good week in practice. Working on our penalty kill, I think our penalty kill is great. We really tracked down everything in the (defensive) zone, and I think that we had a great gap. We helped make the shots go through, and I think that led to a good result.”
On first Big Ten goal for the Gophers in conference history…
“I didn’t realize it at first. But, I think that it was actually a great win by (Kyle) Rau to get it back to me. I just had to get it to the net. (Hudson) Fasching made a great screen, and I didn’t have to do much, just get it to the net. It was really the great move by Rau and a great screen by Fashing. It was pretty special and something that I will remember forever.”
Junior Forward Seth Ambroz:
On his goal from behind the net…
“It was interesting. We won the draw there, and (Justin) Holl, threw it down low. It kind of seemed like the goalie lost his footing there for a second. And I just kind of wanted to see what would happen. Coach (Lucia) always talks about throwing the puck at the net from bad angles. So, I just tried it, and I was fortunate enough to get a nice bounce, and it found the back of the net.”
On the rivalry with Wisconsin…
“It’s different in the Big Ten. Obviously, Wisconsin is now the biggest conference rival. So, tomorrow night should be a barn burner, and it should be a lot of fun. Hopefully, we play well again tomorrow, and hopefully get another circle (a sweep).”
