DULUTH, Minn. - Eric Schierhorn turned away all 26 shots he faced for his ninth career shutout and even added an assist as the No. 3 Gopher Hockey program picked up a 2-0 win over No. 16 Union for Minnesota's first victory of the season.

Casey Mittelstadt and Rem Pitlick scored for the Maroon & Gold as the team bounced back after a 4-3 overtime loss to No. 6/12 Minnesota Duluth on Friday night in the season opener.

In goal, Schierhorn backstopped Minnesota to victory in his 77th-straight start for Minnesota. The junior has started every game since arriving on campus and will likely tie John Lothrup (1964-66) for the program record for consecutive starts next Friday. The two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year also picked up his fifth career point (all assists) on Saturday and has recorded a shutout in his first win of the season in each of his three seasons with the program.

While Schierhorn and the defense shut down the Dutchmen, a pair of second period tallies pushed Minnesota to a win at AMSOIL Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Gophers (1-1-0 overall, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) jumped out to a one-goal lead when Mittelstadt pounded home a loose puck for his first collegiate goal at 3:43 of the second period. Tyler Nanne set up the goal for his first collegiate point while Pitlick also picked up an assist.

Pitlick added his first goal of the year later in the period, putting home a power-play attempt at 10:09 of the second stanza. Steve Johnson and Schierhorn picked up assists on the insurance goal. The Gophers finished the night 1-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Minnesota outshot Union 36-26.
