The Gophers have four freshmen on this year’s roster. The final one in our freshman spotlight series is Shane Wiskus. Wiskus is considered the number one recruit in his class and is a member of the U.S. Junior National Team. He qualified to compete in the senior division at the 2017 P&G Championships this past summer and earned gold in the senior all-around competition at the University of Calgary International Cup. He was the junior national all-around champion at the 2016 P&G Championships as well as the national all-around champion at the 2016 Junior Olympic National Championships.
Gopher Sports: How has your time on campus been so far? Anything surprise you so far?
Shane Wiskus: So far, my time on campus has been great. School and training are both going very well. One thing that has surprised me is the amount resources we have on campus and the help we have access to.
GS: What are you most looking forward to?
SW: I am most looking forward to my first collegiate season as a Gopher.
GS: What has it been like to meet your teammates? Who is the funniest teammate so far?
SW: It has been fun hanging out with the team and having a family you can lean on for anything. The whole team jokes around with each other but I would have to say the funniest is our captain Alex Wittenberg.
GS: What is your favorite gymnastics event?
SW: I enjoy all of the events but my favorite is high bar. I love the rush of flipping over the bar and sticking a dismount after a perfect set.
GS: Favorite gymnastics memory?
SW: My favorite gymnastics memory would have to be competing for Team USA in Berlin, Germany. It was a great experience that I will remember forever.
GS: What do you enjoy doing outside of gymnastics?
SW: Outside of gymnastics I spend most of my time with friends. I also enjoy watching Netflix with my favorite show being “The Office.” In the summertime I love being out on the lake.
GS: What is one thing Gopher fans should know about you?
SW: I love competing in front of a large audience so come watch the Gophers Men’s Gymnastics Team at the Maturi Pavilion and show us how loud you can get!
