MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher men’s gymnastics team has released its 2014 schedule, highlighted by four home meets along with the annual Windy City Invite in Chicago and the Winter Cup in Las Vegas. The NCAA championship will be hosted by Michigan in April.
Minnesota hosts its annual Alumni Meet at the Sports Pavilion as a tune up for the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 11.
The Gophers then kick off the regular season at the Windy City Invite in Chicago on Saturday, Jan. 18. Minnesota finished fourth at last year’s meet, led by five solid performances on high bar and an impressive floor routine from Sean Bauer (St. Louis, Mo.).
The team returns to the Sports Pavilion for back-to-back home meets against 2013 national runner-up Oklahoma and UIC (Jan. 25) and Big Ten Conference foes Nebraska and Illinois (Feb. 1).
The Gophers begin a four-week road swing at Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 8 before traveling to Iowa (Feb. 15), the Winter Cup in Las Vegas (Feb. 20 & 22) and Penn State (March 1). Daniel DiBenedetto (Vernon, Conn.), Ellis Mannon (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Zack Chase (Woodinville, Wash.) competed for the Gophers at the 2013 Winter Cup, led by DiBenedetto’s seventh place finish on high bar.
Minnesota returns home to the Sports Pavilion for Senior Night on Saturday, March 8, when the team hosts Iowa and Brockport in its final home meet of the year.
The Gophers wrap up the regular season by traveling to Nebraska with Iowa, Air Force and Illinois (March 15) in a tune up for the 2014 Big Ten Conference Championships, which will be held in Lincoln., Neb., the following weekend (March 28-29). Minnesota rallied for a third-place finish at last year’s Big Ten championship. In the individual event finals, Mannon finished second on the pommel horse and Steve Jaciuk (New Berlin, Wis.) took third on high bar.
Defending national champion Michigan is the host of 2014 NCAA championships, beginning with the NCAA Qualifier (April 10) in Ann Arbor, Mich. The 2014 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championship is scheduled for April 11-12.
The Sports Pavilion also will serve as the location for two junior meets in conjunction with two of the Gophers' regular season home meets. The 2014 John Roethlisberger Iceberg Invite will be held Jan. 31-Feb. 2, and the MIGS Program National Invitational is March 7-9.
General admissions single-meet tickets for Gopher home meets will be available for $8 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors. University of Minnesota students receive free admission with a valid student ID, and $4 tickets are available to groups of 10 of more. With five honorees named today, Minnesota now boasts a total of nine Academic All-Americans for the 2016-17 academic year.
