Packed Summer Comes To End For Men's Gym
Sept. 1, 2017

As the calendar flips from August to September and thoughts of class creeps into student-athlete’s minds, we take a look back at a busy summer for the men’s gymnastics team.

The Gophers were represented at some of the summer’s biggest men’s gymnastics competitions with athletes at both the P&G Championships and the World University Games.

Newly hired assistant coach Jordan Valdez, senior Jalon Stephens and freshmen Shane Wiskus all competed at the P&G Championships. Shaun Herzog competed at the P&G Qualifier earlier this summer as well. Valdez finished fourth place on parallel bars while Stephens finished fourth on high bar.

Wiskus had a strong showing on the all-around and will be repestned on the USA Junior National team.

Full results of the P&G Championships can be found here.

“Competing at championships was an unbelievable experience. It was great performing at such a high level of gymnastics,” Stephens said. “As soon as the competition was over my drive and motivation to get back in the gym to train was extremely high. I learned a lot that I will take with me for the upcoming season. I am excited to see what is to come for my teammates and I.”

The World University Games pitted teammates against each other with Vitali Kan and Tristan Duran on Team USA and Joel Gagnon and Justin Karstadt on Team Canada.

Both teams were pleased with the outcome of the event after going in with a goal of finishing in the top-eight.

“Being able to attend the World University Games was absolutely incredible. Competing with the rest of the Canadian guys was so much fun,” Gagnon said. “We made sure there was an exciting competition atmosphere which made the experience one-of-a-kind.”

“Competing at the World University Games was a moment in my life that I'll cherish forever,” Kan said. “The competition had its ups and downs, but I made sure to keep my head up. It was an amazing, high energy meet to be a part of. The trip as a whole was a once in a lifetime experience, and I definitely left with some great friends and unforgettable memories!

The Gophers wrapped up the summer by having some fun at the Minnesota State Fair.
