PITTSBURGH - Gopher senior Ellis Mannon and incoming freshmen Yaroslav Pochinka are set to compete at the annual P&G Gymnastics Championships today, as part of the process to determine the U.S. team for the World Championships. Mannon and Pochinka will compete today and Sunday at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh.
Mannon and Pochinka are two of 78 athletes slated to compete to determine all-around and individual national champions, as well as the national team for the junior and senior elite levels. Mannon, the 2014 B1G and NCAA pommel horse champion, will compete in the senior division in the all-around, while Pochinka is set to compete in the all-around at the junior level.
The P&G Championships traditionally serves as part of the selection process for the U.S. team for the World Championships, and in 2014 it will also determine the Senior Pan American Championship Team.
The two Gophers will face stiff competition in a field that features three Olympians, five world medalists and many members of the U.S. Senior National Team.
Mannon and Pochinka both competed in last year's event, and advanced to the 2014 Winter Cup in Las Vegas based on their performances. The Winter Cup is the next step in determining the Senior Men's National Team, and this year will take place on Feb. 20 and 22.
Pochinka begins competition on the high bar at 1 p.m. ET Friday. The senior division begins at 7 p.m. ET Friday, and Mannon's first event will be floor exercise.
Tickets may be purchased at the Dick's Sporting Goods Box Office at CONSOL Energy Center, Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets or charge by phone at 800-745-3000. The USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show will be held in conjunction with 2014 U.S. Gymnastics Championships at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center as well.
Fans unable to attend the championships can also follow the action online and on television. USA Gymnastics will provide a live stream for the first day of both senior men's and women's competitions, and all junior competitions will be streamed online at pgchamps.com/live.
